MAXnotes for The Sound and the Fury (MAXnotes)
Published in Paperback by Research & Education Assn (September, 1996)
Authors: Research, Education Association Staff, Boria Sax, and Research & Education Association
Average review score:

you need this
I'm an insatiable reader who would only buy book notes such as these for the fun of correcting them with a red marker; however this book by Faulkner is an exercise in trendy techniqe. So if you're not totally jiggy with the stream-of-consciousness method that Joyce (the master) and Woolfe were so enamored with, this will be the clue book that might help you figure out just what it is Bill was trying to say. Good Luck.

Microsoft Front Page 2000: Introductory
Published in Paperback by Course Technology (April, 1900)
Authors: Ann Barron and Chet Lyskawa
Average review score:

A newbie's opinion
Had never created a web site, knew nothing about it. Then took a weekend class on web page design. Essentially self-paced, the class relied entirely on this book, and in fact, though the instructor was helpful in untangling us occasionally, the book minimized that.

The book starts with an imaginary company and imaginary web page designer, Connie Lee. As she decides what she wants to do, the authors take you through every step she does. Every click, every entry.

The book is well laid out, in that when opened, the left page tells you what to do, while the right page has screen views showing what you should be looking at.

The book starts at the very beginning, designing your website, and goes to the very end, or publishing your web site on the Internet.

I went through the entire book and never found a typo or garbled instruction.

The book is excellent for what it intends to do, and that is to give an introduction to web page design. It's very well illustrated and can be used later when you need to recall how something is done.

I wish it explained more of the many options in FrontPage 2000 instead of just telling us what to do to accomplish the task at hand. And I wish it included an explanation of getting information from the user that automatically becomes part of the website for other users to see. Both of these are probably in the next higher level book.

This book is more than enough for someone wanting to set up a simple home page for family photos. It's an almost complete book for someone wanting to set a business page on line, though I can now better appreciate how hard that is to do well.

Good starter book, but doesn't take you all the way there if it's a business you're trying to support.

Milton's Paradise Lost (Cliffs Notes)
Published in Paperback by Cliffs Notes (August, 1988)
Authors: R. C. Flannagan, James L. Roberts, and Gary Carey
Average review score:

Thank God for Cliff Notes
Although this book doesn't have any inspiring ideas or new theories about Milton's Paradise Lost, it does help to understand what the heck happens. The Cliff Notes explains the characters, their history, and biblical references that many people don't fully know. Its a tad boring but it's much better than the actual thing! If you want to pass your test or write a B- essay on Paradise Lost you'll need this book to do it.

The Odyssey (Classics Illustrated Notes)
Published in Paperback by Acclaim Books (March, 1997)
Authors: Maurice A. Randall, Homer, Harley Griffiths, and Homer Odyssey
Average review score:

Fun intro to classic work
This reprint of an old Classics Illustrated comic book has a new section of Notes that turns this book into a study guide as well as a graphic novel. The study guide is a good introduction to anyone who wants to know more about the original Odyssey by Homer. The small size detracts from the original graphic novel with details being lost in the size reduction. Classic Golden Age of Comics style and classical literature wed into an enjoyable reading experience.

Othello (Cliffs Notes)

Eye Opening
This piece of work really opens your eyes and shows the great talent of William Shakespeare. I think that if anyone likes his other works will love this. If your not a Shakespeare fan, this should be the book you read first.

Pastels : Right from Scratch to Pros
This handy book gets you started from scratch like it's the first time you know about pastel painting. Covers a good topics on materials, professional advice, techniques and tools. The page is littered with illustrations and photos to enhance write-up within. The only shortcoming is that the fonts of text tended to be slightly small but thought that's how they are able to keep the book handy. One can read from the start or choose from each relevant topic from the contents. organised layout and logical sequence of lessons conveyed. Good for beginners or intermediate people.
